AFTER A SUDDEN CLOSURE TUESDAY night, rumors about why Chi-town club Next Door closed its doors were spreading faster than you could say the gentrification of Chinatown.

Event promoters who have regular gigs at the Hotel Street haunt said Wednesday that they had heard the place had been shut down because of some undisclosed violation of a Liquor Commission code, but people affiliated with the club were saying it wasn’t as serious as all that. Turns out both sides were right.

This is what we know:

•Initially, the folks at Next Door weren’t saying anything at all. Then they released an unofficial statement yesterday saying that they had closed because they were having sound problems and that they would reopen tomorrow in time for First Friday.

•A report issued June 6 by the Liquor Commission stated that Next Door has been put on probation. Liquor Commission administrator Dewey Kim said that the club is indeed having sound problems — and neighbor problems. Kim said there have been, and continue to be, complaints about the club’s noise level, prompting the probation. During the probation period of six months, commission officials will make routine visits to the club to monitor its sound levels. He said the commission did not order the club to close, and that Next Door has been making an effort to solve its sound problems by hiring a sound engineer and making improvemnets to the air conditioning system, which helps to buffer the sound.

•At 3:15 today, Next Door issued an official statement saying that it will be closed until August 1 for renovation. The statement said:

The venue will be working on some improvements including adding more air conditioning, re-doing interior decoration, and re-organizing and improving the sound system.
As we approach our 3rd anniversary, we want to improve the quality in ambiance, sound, and our entertainment … All in-house promotions including Acid Wash Wednesday, Chinatown Sessions, and Chinatown Social Club will be postponed until August. These events will NOT be moved to another venue.

It’s still not clear why the club decided to close so suddenly and without notice. Phone calls to Next Door staff members have not been returned.

Why we can’t turn out a decent taco is beyond me, but I’ve come to live with it. Or without it, as the case may be. As for being able to nosh at night, I do what everyone else does: head to Wailana or go home.

And if you think the city is slow on the midnight snack uptake, try finding more than a 7-11 musubi after 10 in Kailua. It’s not going to happen. Unless you happen to be driving home on a weekend when Beto, a genius with a taco truck, is parked outside Bob’s Sports Bar hawking his Mexican take-out to Kailuans who opted to go home hungry after a night out instead of trying to hit up a Honolulu diner. But who’s going home hungry now?

Beto, who parks his taco truck on Hamakua Drive from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, has the right idea. Whether the street eatery, called Beto’s Tacos & Platos, will see enough traffic in sleepy Kailua to make it worth Beto’s while remains to be seen, but a plate of tacos after the recent Dropkick Murphys show was the perfect finish to a long night.

Beto’s short menu includes just the staples: tacos, burritos, nachos and a few rotating specials (plates sell for about $6 each), but that’s all anyone needs at midnight. My favorite dish is the nachos, which are piled high with your choice of beef or chicken, cheese, beans, salsa, sour cream and finished off with a handful of shredded cabbage for nice fresh touch. The two-fisted burritos are good too, though they’re far from sophisticated, which isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s street food, and it is what it is.

Beto, who does all the cooking and serving, is friendly and welcoming … and quick with a tortilla. He’s got speedy service down to a science.

And he has a sense of humor.

Shining like a beacon in the night … but seriously, it’s like a beacon in the night.

Everywhere you look these days, it’s all about steampunk. And I get the fascination. It’s like watching pageantry, in all it’s costumed glory, only it’s real. I’ve never submerged myself so entirely in a subculture so as to dress and live a part that is outside the bounds of what mainstream society considers “normal” (what does that mean, anyway?), but I’m all for it. And the great thing about steampunk is that it’s functional fantasy. It’s the unlikely intersecting of technology and romance that results in a young New York City professional showing up to work in a waistcoat and ruffled shirt holding an iPhone that’s been modified to look like it was designed in a Victorian metal worker’s shop. The steampunk revival makes me wonder: Does steampunk exist here? I’ve never seen any sign of it, but that’s not saying much. If you’re out there, steampunks, show yourselves! It would be interesting to see if and how the sub-culture is evolving here and what form it takes. E-mail me photos of yourself and any steampunk accessories, art, fashion you’re into.

Not sure what I’m talking about? Read this.

Suspect you might be a steampunk? Check yourself against this list.

You’re a Steampunk If…

•You bought a flatscreen television and then outfitted it with a burnished brass frame.

•You own a pair of aviator goggles.

•You’ve replaced all the keys on your computer keyboard with keys from an old typewriter.

•You’d rather wear a puffy dress with big sleeves than something a little more comfortable.

•H.G. Wells and Mary Shelly started a religion, you would be a devoted follower.

•You make regular trips to junk yards, rummage sales, estate sales, etc. to find gas lamps, brass chandeliers and parasols.

•Alexander McQueen really gets you.

•One of your favorite movies is The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

•You are a member of a vaudevillian theater troupe.

•You know who Abney Park is and you can sing along.

Good day, dear readers. Here they are:

•This guy can make you a zombie. For a fee. Thanks buddy, but for 80 bucks, I think I could buy me a real one. But he does have quite a knack for creating the undead.

•Peter Travers has an early review of Dark Knight.

•Get the new Dude action figure. Or don’t. I’m not. But I do love the Lebowski.

•Chucks go viral. Just keep clicking on the links at the bottom right of every new screen and realize that there’s never going to an end to our collective love of Converse.

•Jones Cola has launched a line of Campaign Colas. (The folks at Jones love a good gimmick.) The Clinton cola is flat, the McCain cola tastes sort of old and burnt and the Obama cola is a little too effervescent, but it’s still the celebrity cola of choice.

•Canadians don’t like Mike Myers. But, really, who else do they have? They lost Jim Carrey to us ages ago and Howie Mandel was never worth claiming in the first place.

•A Beastie Boy tries his hand at documentary filmmaking.

•Katy Perry of “I Kissed a Girl” insta-fame is also Katy Hudson, a one-time Christian recording artist. That explains a lot.

•Here’s a list of 20 words you can’t say on cellphone TV. Warning: Colorful language after the link!

•Slate.com reports on a reality TV school, which claims toteach you everything you need to know to act real.

•Check out the winning design for Saudi Arabia’s new cultural center. Trippy!

Marysol Ruiz, and her husband Soufiane Bouharkat, have managed to transport a bit of Paris to Waikiki with their little kiosk that’s making quite an impression on Honolulu food lovers. With their menu of sweet and savory crepe selections, it’s worth a trip to the tourist strip for one (or two) of their freshly made crepes.

Though the creperie offers a variety of fillings, from cheese to tuna to fruit to chocolate and any combination of those, my favorites are the simple ones: the “Oh My Sugar!” (sweet butter and brown sugar) crepe and the “Moulin Rouge” (cheese, chicken, tomato, basil).

Marysol and Soufiane will be at this weekend’s Flavors of Honolulu.
